Mary Shelley wurde 1797 in London geboren. Auf einer Reise durch die Schweiz entwickelte sie 1818 die Idee zu ihrem berühmtesten Werk Frankenstein oder Der moderne Prometheus, das zunächst anonym und 1831 in einer von Shelley selbst überarbeiteten und kommentierten Ausgabe erschien. Der Roman gilt heute als Schlüsselwerk der Gothic Fiction und der englischen Romantik sowie als eines der frühesten Beispiele der Science-Fiction-Literatur.
