  • Inspired by a painting in the ceremonial hall of Landshut City Hall, in 1902 a group of Landshut citizens founded the association "Die Förderer" (The Spnsors), which has since been committed to re-enacting the Landshut Wedding 1475 as faithfully as possible. The historic Landshut Wedding of 1475 celebrated the union of the young Duke George of Bavaria-Landshut and Hedwig Jagiellon, Princess of Poland. The wedding was a truly momentous event, with the festivities becoming the most lavish oft the late Middle Ages. The recreation pageant, which is organised by the association "Die Förderer" e.V. and lasts three weeks, is characterised by the great enthusiasm and impressive commitment of the more than 2.500 participants in historical roles and costumes, as well as the pursuit of the greatest possible authenticity when it comes to re-capturing the late medieval period. The association "Die Förderer" e.V. now has well over 8.000 members, representing a broad cross-section of Landshut´s citizens. The motto of this event, which is probably the largest and most elaborate historical costume festival in Europe, is a city brings the Middle Ages to life. The Landshut residents, who organise the event for their own enjoyment and that of guests from all over the world, pay meticulous attention to detail, and the festival is so perfectly executed that it has even impressed historians and experts. The performance of the "Landshut Wedding 1475" is both Bavarian and German cultural heritage, and the association is seeking recognition as a World Heritage Site.
