  • The thoughts of the late and latest Wittgenstein are among the great new beginnings of philosophy in the 20th century and also among its mysteries. His texts are designed for extreme sobriety and clarity, but Wittgenstein did not give them a clear order. The various attempts to at least roughly organise the content have tended to create confusion; none has prevailed. This is because Wittgenstein was concerned with a methodical orientation in philosophising itself, with techniques of reassurance, after all the seemingly absolute certainties of philosophy, including those of his early Logical-Philosophical Treatise, had been lost. In his late Philosophical Investigations, he decided to present ‘a number of landscape sketches’, for which he constantly developed new drafts. They were intended as instructions on how to navigate philosophising, as aids to philosophical orientation in confusing terrain, no more, no less. The late Wittgenstein linked philosophising to the ‘language games’ and ‘forms’ of everyday life like no one before him. He himself used the term ‘orientation’ in composites such as ‘orientation sign’ and ‘orientation rule’ and explored the language game of orientation with numerous other terms from its semantic environment. The concept of orientation could be the ‘redeeming word’ that Wittgenstein sought to the end and in which his philosophical endeavours come together to form a coherent picture.
