Rail Travel Guide Glacier Express, Bernina Express and Rhaetian Railway The richly illustrated rail travel guide Glacier Express – Bernina Express – Rhaetian Railway invites readers on a unique journey of discovery through the impressive mountain landscapes of Graubünden and Valais, following Switzerland’s most famous panoramic and mountain railways. At its heart are the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express – two of Europe’s most spectacular train routes – complemented by other lines of the Rhaetian Railway: the Arosa Line, the Prättigau Line, the Engadin Line, as well as cross connections through the Albula Valley, Lower Engadin and the Valposchiavo. The Glacier Express is presented in its full length from St. Moritz to Zermatt with numerous intermediate stops – including historical background, technical features, scenic highlights and important engineering structures such as the Albula Tunnel, the Oberalp Pass or the Furka Base Tunnel. The Bernina Express fascinates with its route across the Bernina Pass, past the Morteratsch Glacier and down into the Italian town of Tirano – explained in detail with regard to the line’s course, viaducts and railway history. The guide also covers lesser-known but equally fascinating routes: the steep and winding Arosa Line from Chur, the historic connection from Landquart via Klosters to Davos with the Wiesener Viaduct, and the Engadin Line from St. Moritz via Zernez to Scuol-Tarasp, whose planned extension into Tyrol was never realized. In addition to detailed route descriptions, the guide provides numerous tips on sights along the way, organized by region and line sections, supplemented with overview maps. A simple star rating system helps readers choose the most rewarding destinations. Historical background, architectural highlights, scenic impressions and personal travel observations together create a multifaceted picture. The authors Ingrid and Achim Walder have personally visited and photographed almost all of the places described. Additional impressions and further information can be found on the accompanying online portal www.reisetipps-europa.de . This travel guide is aimed at railway enthusiasts with a cultural and technical interest, lovers of the Alps, and all those who wish to experience Switzerland at a slower pace – with a reliable and knowledgeable companion at their side.
